As soon as I walked into Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre, I immediately felt at home. The rustic, cozy ambience reminded me of my own home back in Chicago, and the simple and clean Scandinavian design made me reimagine how my own apartment would look with these neat pieces. I’ve had the privilege of staying in many impressive and comfortable hotels all over the world, but few that have fit my personality and style so perfectly that I’ve started to believe I’m soul mates with a hotel. Now that I’ve found my perfect match, I know I’ll be returning to Reykjavik, and I know I’ll be staying at Canopy by Hilton. If you’re looking to stay in stye in Reykjavik, Iceland, look no further than Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre.

Common Spaces & Staff

The lobby at Canopy contains a café/bar to the left, stairs and common sitting spaces straight ahead, and a check in area to the right. There were two staff at the check in desk when I arrived, both on their laptops at a long, wooden table. If they hadn’t noticed me immediately and waved me over, I would have thought they were a couple of guests at the hotel working on their laptops in the beautifully designed common area. I had never seen a hotel check in desk set up like this before and appreciated how efficient and welcoming it felt.

Since we had signed up for a Reykjavik food tour that began at 12:30 PM and wanted to check in and freshen up in our rooms before heading over to the tour, I emailed the hotel and asked if they could accommodate for an earlier check in time around 11:00 AM. The staff emailed me back right away and kindly confirmed that our room was ready for check in by 10:30 AM. We were each given a bag of caramel corn as a welcome gift upon arrival, and we decided to further indulge ourselves with a coffee and croissant from the café.

There were several common areas on the first floor that were each equipped with cozy chairs, sofas, and the same beautiful Scandinavian design reflected in the rest of the hotel. In one common area, a tall bookshelf filled with books lined an entire wall. It was so cozy that I felt like I was in someone’s personal home library.

On-Site Dining

In addition to the café, the hotel also has a bar and restaurant called Geiri Smart. Geiri Smart is open daily and serves complimentary breakfast for hotel guests from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM. We had the privilege of having breakfast there one morning, and we are so glad we did. The breakfast is served buffet style, with an area of hot foods, an area for cereals, an area for fruits and yogurts, and an area for drinks. The hot foods ranged from eggs to quiche to salmon pizza, and all of it was delicious. This was by far the best breakfast I have had at any hotel, not to mention the best complimentary breakfast. I have easily paid 20 euro or more for breakfasts half as impressive as this spread. Needless to say, do not skimp on the breakfast when you stay here!

Canopy also hosts a complimentary tasting from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM every evening in the cafe area to the left of the lobby. We tasted a local beer while we were there, and the hosts were extremely knowledgeable about the beer and generous with their pours.

We were given a bedroom on the fifth floor with a beautiful view of Reykjavik. Like the rest of the hotel, the simple Scandinavian design in the room strongly appealed to my tastes. Our room was set up like an alcove, with a shorter slanted wall on one side of the bed, which gave the room an extra cozy feel. The room was impeccably clean, the bed comfortable, the amenities plentiful, and the hospitality once again on point as we were greeted with my name on the television screen and the telephone display when we walked in.

The room was equipped with full amenities, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, hair dryer, iron board, and even a Nespresso machine, which we used for our morning coffee. I’m not sure if we used the machine improperly, but the machine was extremely loud when it was brewing coffee and almost sounded like someone had taken a drill to our room. You may wish to test the machine before trying it for the first time at 5:00 AM and waking up your travel companions.

Hotel Amenities

In addition to the café and the restaurant/bar, we also found a rooftop terrace and a fitness room in the hotel. The rooftop terrace is located on the fifth floor and connects the two wings of the hotel. In one wing is the main lobby, café, and check in area, and in the other wing is the restaurant/bar and additional hotel rooms. As our hotel room was located in the wing with the restaurant/bar, we would walk across the rooftop terrace to enter the wing in which our hotel room was located. If the weather is unpleasant or you simply do not wish to go outside to reach your room, there is always the option of taking the elevator up to the fourth floor, walking across the interior hallway to the adjacent wing, and taking the elevator or stairs up one more floor.

A couple of rather unique amenities we found at the hotel were a free bike rental service and a free records rental service. We found Reykjavik to be quite small and walkable, but if you are short on time or prefer to get around more quickly, the bikes are a great option. There are also record players available for rental from the café to the left of the main lobby, and there you will also find a large selection of records that you can bring up to your room and enjoy comfortably. Like the complimentary breakfast and complimentary wifi, these rentals are of course complimentary as well. Canopy by Hilton really does an excellent job of making its guests feel right at home by not nickel and dime-ing them on every added amenity.

Reykjavik is not a large city and is mostly walkable, and we found ourselves taking short walks from Canopy to all the main sites. The hotel is located in more of a neighborhood area rather than a touristy area, which I appreciated as I always try to live like a local when I travel. It also gave us easy access to many local bars and restaurants in Reykjavik.

Overall, I cannot recommend Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre more highly. This was my home away from home during my stay in Reykjavik, and I am confident you will feel the same homey yet hip vibe that I did. If you are looking to stay in style in Reykjavik, there is no better place to do so than at Canopy by Hilton.

What a cozy little hotel! Loved that they accommodated early check-in without imposing an additional fee. And I can’t believe that hot breakfast buffet is complimentary! It looks like a GREAT selection of food too- I’m totally staying here when we visit Iceland!

    1. I really could not believe the free breakfast buffet myself! It just goes to show how hard they work at making you feel right at home though, without imposing any additional fees for anything there. You will love it!!

  2. As a travel writer, I enjoy checking out new properties. This one sure looks elegant, stylish and classy at the same time. Reykjavik sounds like an interesting place. I love places which are pedestrian friendly since I love to walk non-stop for hours. That’s the best way to absorb a new place. `

    1. I completely agree! Although here, if you walk nonstop for hours, you might just walk yourself straight out of Reykjavik! This hotel was in the perfect location to start exploring the city.

  3. This hotel is beautiful! Iceland is one of my dream destinations, but with a hotel as lovely as this, I would surely want a couple of days to just sleep in and enjoy the amenities. The library is gorgeous! And your room is so cozy, not to mention, the view is awesome too. And the food! Wow! That looks like an incredible breakfast! Yep, I would need more days here if only to get more chances to eat that kind of breakfast!

    1. I totally wish I had more time to sleep in and enjoy all the amenities! Honestly I could see myself living there permanently… hmm I wonder if Canopy will let me move in for good? (;

  4. The Hilton reads to be the perfect place to stay whilst enjoying Iceland. I appreciate they were very accommodating with your early check in request. I love hotels with fitness rooms as I alway feel guilty for not exercising when I’m away. The view from the terrace looks incredible, it’s a shame to go sightseeing when you can stay in such a comfortable place.

    1. I completely agree, James, and I was very torn between wanting to stay in and enjoy all that the hotel had to offer vs going out and exploring Reykjavik. I could easily see myself staying here for a week and feeling like I’ve never left the comforts of my own apartment.

  5. Looks like a great hotel, I never realised the hilton had a hotel in then centre of town. It looks so cute and comfy more my type of place to stay. The breakfast looks amazing too 🙂

    1. The style was perfect for me – I felt like I was staying in a hip friend’s apartment and not in an upscale hotel. The breakfast was the best I’ve ever had, and I couldn’t believe it was free.

  6. I love Hilton hotels, their staff do make everything possible to make each guest feel special. I see that the Canopy by Hilton in Reykjavik is no exception. I love the decor of the lobby and the beautiful arrangement of the room. The view from the room over the snowy rooftops of the city is so romantic also.

    1. Yes, the view was just lovely and I can imagine how nice and romantic it would be to enjoy a drink on the rooftop terrace in the summer months when it’s warmer outside. Canopy did an excellent job of making me feel special and at home – I only wish I could’ve stayed longer.

  7. The Carmel corn is a really nice touch. It’s the extra little things that make a hotel stand out. The toiletries are another big bonus, especially in Europe. And did I read correctly that they even had conditioner?? I’ve never understood why so many hotels don’t, so that small fact is enough to win me over. I love the vibe of this hotel and the cool furnishings in the lobby!

    1. Yes, Melissa, they even had conditioner! That was a big deal for me especially on the day we went snorkeling in Silfra and my hair turned into a big tangled mess! I never understood why more hotels don’t have conditioner either, but I loved that Canopy provided that.

    1. It was such a lovely treat to be greeted with! Especially since we had just come from a long flight and were starting to get pretty hungry. We found the location perfect both for exploring the popular sites and for checking out the local bars.

  8. this hotel sounds amazing – and that breakfast! wow! That view is awesome too, makes it hard to leave the hotel! We’re heading to Iceland this year I’ll have to add it to our list! thanks for sharing.

  9. I love the Hilton – it’s often my go-to! I My favourites include the Amsterdam (Double Tree) with its rooftop bar and panoramic view over the city, and the Hilton in Panama City, with bay windows overlooking the Pacific in our suite. Tweeted 🙂

    1. Thanks Marguerite! I’ll have to check out the Hiltons in Amsterdam and Panama City in the future – they tend to do a great job all around, but I found Canopy in Reykjavik to have the most style and homey feel 🙂
