There are almost 200 countries in the world, but it seems only a handful of them are consistently talked about. While these countries are certainly worth visiting, there are also a number of other countries that are must-see places. These underrated countries often have less developed tourism industries, but also give way to some of the most amazing, unique experiences you’ll ever have. Here is our take on the top 5 most underrated travel destinations in the world!
Faroe Islands

Starting off our list of most underrated travel destinations in the world is the Faroe Islands! The Faroe Islands are a group of small islands located between Scotland and Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean. Where Iceland now gets millions of visitors a year, the Faroe Islands still see only a few hundred thousand. This number is increasing, and the Faroes closed to tourists recently to decrease the effects of tourism on the country.
The Faroes natural landscape is a mixture between the landscapes of Iceland and Scotland, but more rugged and isolated. You can access the country via plane from a few countries, including Denmark, Iceland, Scotland, and Norway, or you can take a boat (depending on the season) from Iceland or Denmark. If you’re looking for an off-the-radar trip where you can discover a local culture largely untouched by tourism, add the Faroes to your list!
Slovenia

Slovenia is a country in the Balkans, and boasts some of the most beautiful mountains and lakes. Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a city straight out of a fairytale. While Slovenia was technically in the Yugoslav Wars, their involvement only lasted for 10 days. It’s hard to imagine a war ever occurred when you visit now!
Aside from the quaint Ljubljana, Slovenia has a ton of must-see locations. Of these, Lake Bled and the Vintgar Gorge are both easy day-trips from Ljubljana. If nature isn’t reason enough to visit Slovenia, Slovenians are also some of the most hospitable people around. If a local invites you over for a drink or a meal, rest assured. This is not uncommon, and you should accept their invitation! Of all countries, there was no question that Slovenia would make our list of most underrated travel destinations in the world. Don’t miss out on this hidden gem of a country!
Mongolia

Mongolia isn’t found on popular travel lists, but hear us out on why it’s a must on our list of top 5 most underrated travel destinations in the world. The country is largely nomadic, and has not been heavily developed with infrastructure. Tour companies offer experiences such as living with nomadic families and seeing their lifestyle, going on a multi-day horse trek, exploring the Gobi desert via camel, and more unique opportunities that are hard to find elsewhere.
There’s definitely a trade-off when it comes to the low number of tourists Mongolia sees and tourism costs. On one hand, you get to experience a country without the distractions that tourism brings. On the other hand, this less-developed tourism industry leads to ridiculously high prices for tours. Given how vast and difficult-to-navigate the country is, booking a tour is one of the only options to safely explore Mongolia. Alternatively, you can hop on a train to Moscow and see the country through a layer glass, but you won’t be able to make many stops with this option!
Madagascar

Madagascar is an island located off the coast of mainland Africa, in the Indian Ocean. Despite having beautiful beaches, wildlife, and culture, Madagascar only sees about 300,000 tourists a year, and tourism remains relatively underdeveloped. However, for anyone interested in ecotourism and wildlife, Madagascar is an absolute must!
Madagascar is one of the top countries when it comes to plant and animal species. For starters, 80% of Madagascar’s plant species can’t be found anywhere else in the world! Take a trip through one of the many rainforests and experience firsthand how diverse the wildlife is. Maybe you’ll even make some lemur friends! Afterward, you can rest on one of Madagascar’s white-sand beaches, or go diving and whale-watching in the Indian Ocean. Madagascar is truly the best of both worlds, and has more than earned a spot on our list of top 5 most underrated travel destinations in the world!
Bolivia

Closing out our list of most underrated travel destinations in the world is Bolivia. Bolivia has much to offer in terms of culture, history, and adventure, but doesn’t receive nearly as many visitors as neighbouring Peru, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. This is hard to believe, considering all the attractions and landmarks there are to explore!
Start your Bolivian adventure at Lake Titicaca, one of Bolivia’s most well-known destinations. It is the highest navigable lake in the world, and the Incan civilization was even believed to have started here! Bolivia also contains Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, and Madidi National Park, which houses Quechuan locals and spans across the Andes and Amazon. Whether it’s hiking through the Andes, hanging with flamingos at Laguna Colorada, or learning about the Incan civilization, there is something for everyone in this underrated country.
The world is full of endless adventure, and it can be hard to know where to get started. This list of the 5 most underrated travel destinations in the world is a good place to start, and will not disappoint! There’s no telling when these places will start becoming more popular, so what are you waiting for? Book your trip now!
