Where to Stay in Chiang Mai: De Lanna Boutique Hotel Where to Stay in Chiang Mai: De Lanna Boutique Hotel

The most ideal area to stay in Chiang Mai, Thailand is undoubtedly within Old City walls, and there is one hotel in particular that stands out as the best. I stayed at De Lanna Boutique Hotel for three nights and could not have asked for a more authentically Thai experience. The Lanna style hotel comes with beautifully designed rooms with private balconies, a restaurant and poolside bar, and lush greenery spread throughout the hotel grounds. If you’re wondering where to stay in Chiang Mai, look no further than De Lanna Boutique Hotel.

Location

De Lanna Boutique Hotel is located near the center of Chiang Mai’s Old City (the Old City is delineated by the blue square above). It is located near many restaurants, bars, and cafes. It is also within walking distance from a number of impressive temples, including Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, and Wat Chiang Man, to name a few.

Because of its central location, there are also a lot of taxis, tuk tuks, and Ubers readily available right outside the hotel. Check out our guide to spending the perfect three days in Chiang Mai to explore more fun things to do there.

Check-In Process

The check-in process was quick and efficient. I emailed the hotel prior to my arrival asking if it would be possible to check in early, since my flight arrived at around 9:00 AM. The hotel immediately emailed me back stating that a room would likely not be available until later but that I was welcome to drop off my bags at the hotel upon arrival.

Upon arriving in Chiang Mai, I headed straight to De Lanna to drop off my bags. To my surprise, the hotel had managed to prepare my room prior to my arrival since they knew I wanted to check in early. A staff member showed me to my room and explained the various amenities available to me. For the duration of my time there, the staff were friendly and helpful and made me feel at home at De Lanna.

Atmosphere

One of my favorite things about De Lanna is its atmosphere. The hotel grounds are covered in greenery and made me feel like I was in a park surrounded by nature while still enjoying the comforts of a 4-star hotel.

Wooden pathways lead the way around the hotel grounds. On one side of the pathway are trees, plants, and shrubbery. On the other side are streams of water with fish swimming inside. I was amazed that I was able to feel as if I were in the middle of a park or forest while actually being located in the middle of a major city. The atmosphere here could not have been better.

Rooms

The rooms at De Lanna are designed in the Lanna style from northern Thailand. The Lanna kingdom occupied northern Thailand from the 13th to 18th centuries and plays a big role in the history of Thailand. From the colors to the textiles to the decorations, guests feel as if they have been transported back in time to the Lanna kingdom when they stay at De Lanna.

I was given a deluxe room, which had more than enough space for one person. The low-set bed and the deep and vibrant colors made the room feel like an authentically northern Thai room reminiscent of those occupied by locals thousands of years ago.

The bed was very comfortable and gave me a good night’s sleep. The sheets were spotless and as comfortable as the sheets on my own bed.

Each room comes with complimentary water, tea, and coffee. There are also snacks available for purchase. De Lanna uses glass water bottles instead of plastic ones so as to better protect the environment, which I appreciated very much.

The room comes with an ensuite bathroom, which was also designed in the Lanna style and provided all the amenities I needed, including soap, shampoo, and towels.

Amenities/Dining

De Lanna comes fully equipped with all the amenities you need to comfortably spend days or weeks at the hotel. In the inner courtyard is a swimming pool with lawn chairs, umbrellas, and small tables to set your drinks or other belongings. Adjacent to the pool is an outdoor dining area as well as an indoor dining/bar area. Meals are served from 6:30 – 10:30 AM (Breakfast), 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Lunch), and 6:00 – 11:00 PM (Dinner). The bar is open from 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM daily.

The dining area was spacious and cool, and the service was excellent. De Lanna provides complimentary breakfast to its guests, so I had to check it out. Upon entering the dining room, I was greeted by a staff member, who asked for my room number and kindly directed me to a table of my choosing. There were a number of empty tables available when I arrived at around 7:30 AM.

The complimentary breakfast was served buffet style and came with a variety of cold and hot foods, as well as coffee, tea, milk, and juices. I was very impressed by the quantity of food and the availability of both Asian-style and western-style foods. There were plenty of options for vegetarians as well. You are sure to find something you like at this breakfast buffet.

I was satisfied after one plate of food but was certainly tempted to return for more.

My breakfast: egg, toast, ham, bacon, fried rice, scrambled egg with tomato, and strawberry yogurt

When I returned for breakfast the following day, I was surprised to see a different selection of foods at the breakfast buffet. Considering the quantity and variety of foods offered here, the fact that De Lanna has a rotating menu is very impressive. I enjoyed my meal the second day just as much as the first.

There is also a bar attached to the restaurant. Although I did not have an opportunity to spend time at the bar here, as I was out exploring during most of the day, I would have loved to sit poolside for an afternoon with a cold beer. The bar is also a great place to meet fellow travelers if you are traveling solo.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Chiang Mai, Thailand, there’s no question that the best place to stay is De Lanna Boutique Hotel.
